Primary guṇa: Tamas (Inertia, Darkness, Heavy Concealment)
It covers, conceals, or veils the true nature of Brahman/Ātman from human awareness. Like a small patch of cloud blocking a observer's view of the giant sun, Āvaraṇa Śakti does not destroy the self-luminous Reality, but obstructs the individual intellect (Buddhi) from recognizing it.
- Astitva-Āvaraṇa ('It does not exist'): The cognitive doubt leading a person to believe that divine, infinite consciousness does not exist.
- Bhāna-Āvaraṇa ('It is not experienced'): The cognitive blindness leading a person to say 'Even if Brahman exists, it is not evident to me.'
शास्त्रीय: In twilight, Āvaraṇa Śakti obscures the true identity of a coil of rope lying on the path, hiding the fact that it is a harmless piece of hemp.
A Sensory Blindspot / Cognitive Agnosia
Imagine a person wearing dark, polarized blindfolds. The room around them is filled with radiant sunlight and vibrant art, but the blindfold completely conceals its existence. The light is still fully present in the room, but Āvaraṇa Śakti acts as the blindfold, obscuring the underlying fact from the subject.
उपाय: Neutralized through Parokṣa Jñāna (Indirect Knowledge acquired through scriptural study, reasoning, and the guidance of a Guru).
