The Three Granthis: Breakdown & Locations
Each Granthi is associated with a specific deity of the Hindu Trinity (Trimurti), reflecting the level of cosmic creation, preservation, or dissolution that the practitioner must transcend.
ब्रह्म ग्रंथि
Brahma Granthi (The Knot of Creation & Materiality)
Psychological barrier
Fear of physical mortality, attachment to material comforts, sensory pleasures, survival instincts, and deep-seated worldly desires.
Consciousness state
Binds consciousness to the physical body (Sthula Sharira) and the illusion of physical separateness.
विष्णु ग्रंथि
Vishnu Granthi (The Knot of Preservation & Emotion)
Psychological barrier
Emotional attachment to family, relationships, societal role, personal identity, egoic pride, and compassion mixed with attachment.
Consciousness state
Binds consciousness to emotional identity, the desire to maintain/preserve one’s social self, and subtle emotional ties.
रुद्र ग्रंथि
Rudra Granthi (The Knot of Shiva & Intellect)
Psychological barrier
Intellectual pride, attachment to spiritual experiences, conceptual knowledge, subtle ego, and attachment to psychic powers (Siddhis).
Consciousness state
The final barrier before non-dual realization. It creates the subtle illusion of a “separate seeker” who is meditating, holding onto the last trace of individuality.
03
How Bandhas & Pranayama Pierce the Knots (Granthi Bhedana)
The Granthis cannot be dissolved through mere intellectual understanding; they require intense subtle pressure generated through physical postures (Asanas), breath retention (Kumbhaka), and energy locks (Bandhas).
The Pressure Collision
Jalandhara Bandha seals upward Prana Vayu
Mula Bandha seals downward Apana Vayu
