Traditional timing rule

Observed on the 13th lunar day (Trayodashi) of every fortnight during the twilight hour (Pradosha Kala) of both Shukla and Krishna Paksha.

This rule describes traditional recurrence only. Use a reliable place-specific Panchang for an occurrence date.

Practice outline

  • Bathe and wear clean clothes before sunset in preparation for evening prayers.
  • Perform worship of Lord Shiva and Nandi during the twilight window (Pradosha Kala).
  • Consume light items like milk, fruits, or a single salt-free meal after evening prayers.

Restraint and alternatives

  • Avoid eating heavy grains or meals during daylight and twilight hours.
  • Do not sleep or engage in idle gossip during the sacred twilight window.
  • Avoid anger, ego, and negative thoughts throughout the day.

Completion and reflection

Validated by performing the specific Pradosha puja during twilight with sincerity, offering bilva leaves and water/milk to the Shivling, and breaking the fast thereafter.
