Traditional timing rule

Observed on the fourth day (Chaturthi) of the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) of every lunar month.

This rule describes traditional recurrence only. Use a reliable place-specific Panchang for an occurrence date.

Practice outline

  • Fast from sunrise until the moon rises at night.
  • Perform evening worship of Lord Ganesha, offering Durva grass and modaks.
  • Break the fast immediately after sighting the moon and offering water/prayers to it.

Restraint and alternatives

  • Strictly avoid eating grains or heavy meals during the daylight hours.
  • Avoid losing patience or reacting with anger when faced with obstacles.
  • Do not break the fast before seeing the moon at night.

Completion and reflection

Validated by completing the day-long fast, sighting the moon at night, offering prayers to Lord Ganesha, and partaking in food post-moonrise.
