Traditional timing rule

Observed on the third day (Tritiya) of the bright fortnight in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada.

This rule describes traditional recurrence only. Use a reliable place-specific Panchang for an occurrence date.

Practice outline

  • Observe a strict Nirjala (waterless) fast for over 24 hours.
  • Worship clay idols of Shiva and Parvati during an overnight vigil (*Jagaran*).
  • Wear traditional bridal attire or vibrant festive clothes.

Restraint and alternatives

  • Strict abstention from all food and water.
  • Avoid sleeping, as the night is meant for prayer and devotional songs.
  • Avoid complaining or negative speech throughout the observance.

Completion and reflection

Validated by completing the full-day and full-night fast/vigil and performing the morning puja on the next day before breaking the fast.
