Spiritual philosophy
Conceived as a grand physical monument to the cosmic greatness of Lord Shiva (*Brihat* meaning grand/infinite). Built by Emperor Raja Raja Chola I, it reflects the pinnacle of royal devotion, architectural mastery, and the belief that the temple is a living microcosm of the universe.
Architecture & structure
Dravidian Chola Architecture (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
Built in 1010 CE entirely out of granite without any mortar or cement. Features a 216-foot soaring Vimana (temple tower), topped by an 80-ton single granite block (Kumbam). Houses one of India's largest monolithic Shiva Lingams (13 feet tall) and a massive 20-ton monolithic Nandi statue carved out of a single rock.

What to go for
Admiring 1,000-year-old Chola architectural engineering, viewing the colossal monolithic Shiva Lingam and Nandi, studying ancient Tamil inscriptions and fresco paintings along the sanctum walls, and observing the shadow geometry of the main tower.

Dress code & guidelines
Traditional modest South Indian attire required. Men must wear Dhoti/Veshti or Kurta-Pyjama; women must wear Saree, Half-Saree, or Chudidhar with Dupatta. Western casuals like shorts, skirts, and sleeveless tops are not allowed.
