01
Theological significance
According to legend, Goddess Sati's waist belt (Kanchi) fell here, making Kanchipuram the supreme Odyana Peetam of South India. Adi Shankaracharya established the Sri Chakra Yantra in front of the deity to pacify her fierce aspect into a compassionate motherly form. It is the sole Shakti shrine in Kanchipuram; all traditional Shiva temples in the city face this central temple.
