Epics (Mahabharata)

Bhishma's Vow of Lifelong Duty

Characters: Devavrata (Bhishma), King Shantanu

Prince Devavrata was the beloved heir to the throne of Hastinapura—brave, intelligent, and deeply respected by everyone. When his widowed father, King Shantanu, fell deeply in love with a fisherwoman named Satyavati, her father refused the marriage unless Shantanu's future grandchildren—not Devavrata—inherited the royal throne. Upon hearing how sad his father was, young Devavrata rode down to the riverbank alone, found the fisherwoman's family, and made an unprecedented, immense lifelong sacrifice. He took a solemn vow to renounce his right to the throne forever and swore never to marry so there would be no rival heirs, ensuring his father's happiness. From that day on, he was known as Bhishma (the one of the terrible, unbreakable vow).
