1.36.1

WITH words sent forth in holy hymns, Agni we supplicate, the Lord Of many families who duly serve the Gods, yea, him whom others also praise.

With sacred hymns we invoke Agni, lord of many households devoted to the Gods—him whom other peoples also praise.

Agni is 'Yahvam' of the 'Devayati' clans—the youthful sacred fire shared across many Vishes (communities). Sanatana Dharma sees the same Agni kindled in every household altar (Garhapatya) and public rite; praise unites families around one living flame that links the microcosm of the home to the cosmic yajna.

Shared purpose across communities. Whether households, teams, or cultures, naming a common living center of intention—clarity, warmth, ethical focus—builds belonging without erasing diversity.

1.36.2

Men have won Agni, him who makes their strength abound: we, with oblations, worship thee. Our gracious-minded Helper in our deeds of might, be thou, O Excellent, this day.

People have established Agni who increases strength; with offerings we honor you. Be our gracious helper in mighty efforts today, O excellent one.

Agni is 'Sahovridham'—the augmenter of Sahas (vital courage and endurance). Through Havis (selfless offering), the seeker invites Sumana (benevolent mindedness). Vedic life treats fire not as mere fuel but as the ally who sustains heroic effort (Vajeshu) in dharma.

Ask for focused energy before hard work. Ritualize the start of demanding days—clear intention, brief gratitude, embodied readiness—so effort is fueled by goodwill rather than frantic force.

1.36.3

Thee for our messenger we choose, thee, the Omniscient, for our Priest. The flames of thee the mighty are spread wide around: thy splendour reaches to the sky.

We choose you as messenger and all-knowing priest. Your mighty flames range widely; your radiance touches the sky.

Agni as Duta (messenger) and Hotar (invoking priest) who is Vishvavedas (omniscient of ritual and cosmos) carries offerings upward. His Archis (flames) spreading and Bhanavah touching Dyaus image the ascent of purified intention from earth to heaven.

Choose reliable channels for communication. Ideas and commitments that are clear, luminous, and well-carried reach farther than muddled signals lost in noise.

1.36.4

The Gods enkindle thee their ancient messenger,—Varuṇa, Mitra, Aryaman. That mortal man, O Agni, gains through thee all wealth, who hath poured offerings unto thee.

Varuna, Mitra, and Aryaman kindle you, the ancient messenger. Through you, O Agni, the mortal who has offered gains all wealth.

The Adityas themselves ignite Agni as Pratna Duta—the primordial envoy. Wealth (Dhana) here is the fruit of Dakshina and dedication: when Rita's guardians kindle the inner fire, the Dashus (giver) receives fullness through cosmic reciprocity.

Integrity attracts compounding support. When ethical alliances (trust, fairness, shared standards) 'kindle' your work, resources and opportunities gather around consistent contribution.

1.36.5

Thou, Agni, art a cheering Priest, Lord of the House, men's messenger: All constant high decrees established by the Gods, gathered together, meet in thee.

O Agni, you are the delightful priest, lord of the house, messenger of the people; all the firm vows the Gods ordained converge in you.

Agni as Grihapati (lord of the household) and Mandro Hota (joyful invoker) gathers 'Vishva Vratani Dhruva'—all steadfast sacred observances. In Grihya and Srauta vision, every vow finds its living center in the consecrated fire of home and altar.

Anchor commitments in a stable center. Habits, ethics, and team norms need a living 'hearth'—daily practice and clear stewardship—where scattered intentions reunite.

1.36.6

In thee, the auspicious One, O Agni, youthfullest, each sacred gift is offered up: This day, and after, gracious, worship thou our Gods, that we may have heroic sons.

In you, auspicious youngest Agni, every offering is cast. Gracious today and hereafter, worship the Gods for us so we may gain heroic vitality.

Agni Yavishtha (ever-youthful) is Subhaga (auspicious). All Havis gathers in him; he becomes the Yajamana's priest to the Devas for Suvirya—noble strength and worthy progeny of body and character.

Invest energy where it compounds. Channel offerings of time and attention into a core practice that renews courage and capacity for the long arc, not only today's win.

1.36.7

To him in his own splendour bright draw near in worship the devout. Men kindle Agni with their sacrificial gifts, victorious o’er the enemies.

The devout draw near him in his own bright glory; people kindle Agni with fuel and sacred gifts.

Approach to Agni is into 'Sve Dyumna'—his intrinsic radiance. Kindling with Samidh and Havis is Upasana: the seeker does not invent the light but tends what already shines as cosmic and inner fire.

Come toward what already gives light. Mentorship, craft, and communities of practice grow when we feed them steadily rather than chasing novelty alone.

1.36.8

Vṛtra they smote and slew, and made the earth and heaven and firmament a wide abode. The glorious Bull, invoked, hath stood at Kaṇva's side: loud neighed the Steed in frays for kine.

They struck and slew Vritra and made earth, heaven, and mid-space a wide dwelling; the glorious Bull made waters flow for Manu.

Recalls Indra-Agni's liberation of the waters by piercing Vritra (obstructing force). The three realms become 'Urukshaya'—a spacious home—and the Bull (Vrishan) releases life-waters for Manu, archetypal human. Agni participates in cosmic unblocking of Rita.

Break stuck systems that hoard flow. Psychological, social, or ecological blockages need courageous clarity so resources, creativity, and care can circulate widely again.

1.36.9

Seat thee, for thou art mighty; shine, best entertainer of the Gods. Worthy of sacred food, praised Agni! loose the smoke, ruddy and beautiful to see.

Be seated, for you are mighty; shine, best host of the Gods. Worthy of sacred food, praised Agni, blaze brilliantly for us.

Agni is invited to Sit (Nisada) as Atithipati—supreme entertainer of the Devas. Offering Anna/Havis to the seated fire is hospitality (Atithya) toward the divine guest who then radiates Dyumna for the yajamana.

Hospitality creates presence. Prepare space, attention, and nourishment so valued people—and your own highest focus—can 'sit' and shine in your life.

1.36.10

Bearer of offerings, whom, best sacrificing Priest, the Gods for Manu's sake ordained; Whom Kaṇva, whom Medhyātithi made the source of wealth, and Vṛṣan and Upastuta.

Bearer of offerings, best sacrificing priest whom the Gods ordained for Manu's sake—whom Kanva, Medhyatithi, and others kindled.

Agni Havyavahana was established by the Devas for Manu (humanity). The Kanva lineage—Kanva, Medhyatithi—continues that ordinance by kindling. Parampara keeps the same fire alive across generations of Rishis.

Honor foundational tools and lineages. Practices that serve human flourishing deserve transmission—apprenticeship, documentation, and grateful reuse—not constant reinvention from zero.

1.36.11

Him, Agni, whom Medhyātithi, whom Kaṇva kindled for his rite, Him these our songs of praise, him, Agni, we extol: his powers shine out preeminent.

Agni whom Medhyatithi and Kanva kindled for their rite—him our songs of praise kindle again, him we celebrate.

Stuti itself becomes kindling. The hymn re-enacts the ancestral ignition: Vak (sacred speech) as Samidh. Remembering Kanva and Medhyatithi situates the present yajna within an unbroken stream of Agni-upasana.

Praise renews motivation. Naming mentors and origin stories while you work reconnects effort to meaning and keeps disciplined practice warm.

1.36.12

Make our wealth perfect thou, O Agni, Lord divine: for thou hast kinship with the Gods. Thou rulest as a King o’er widely-famous strength: be good to us, for thou art great.

Perfect our wealth, O divine Agni; you share kinship with the Gods and rule over riches of heroes.

Agni as Deva with 'Devanam Jami' (kinship with the Gods) is asked to complete Rayi. Heroic wealth (Vira-dhana) includes courage, allies, and resources aligned with dharma—not mere accumulation.

Complete what you start with integrity. Prosperity matures when skill, ethics, and supportive networks (your 'kinship with higher standards') govern how resources are held.

1.36.13

Stand up erect to lend us aid, stand up like Savitar the God: Erect as strength-bestower we call aloud, with unguents and with priests, on thee.

Stand upright to aid us, stand like Savitar; erect as strength-bestower we invoke you.

Often applied to the Yupa (sacrificial post) or Agni's upright flame—Urdhva like Savitar's raising light. The vertical axis of yajna channels Shakti; standing erect symbolizes ready, heaven-aligned help (Avase).

Adopt a posture of readiness. Physical and moral uprightness—clarity, accountability, visible availability—invites others to trust your support.

1.36.14

Erect, preserve us from sore trouble; with thy flame burn thou each ravening demon dead. Raise thou us up that we may walk and live: so thou shalt find our worship mid the Gods.

Upright, guard us from severe distress; with your flame burn every devouring demon. Raise great and glorious wealth for us.

Agni/Yupa as protector burns Rakshas and 'Atrinam' (devouring forces)—inner and outer destroyers of yajna. Urdhva presence yields 'Brihat Dyumna'—expansive luminous prosperity under divine guardianship.

Boundaries that burn away harm. Clear non-negotiables and swift corrective action protect projects from drain, exploitation, and corrosive habits.

1.36.15

Preserve us, Agni, from the fiend, preserve us from malicious wrong. Save us from him who fain would injure us or slay, Most Youthful, thou with lofty light.

Preserve us, Agni, from the fiend and from malicious wrong; save us from one who would injure us with hate.

Prayer for Agni's Gopana (protection) against Rakshas, Dvesha, and Himsa. The fire of viveka and tapas guards the sadhaka from adharmic assault—external hostility and internal malice alike.

Protect attention and relationships from bad-faith harm. Security hygiene, emotional boundaries, and wise allies reduce damage from malice and manipulation.

1.36.16

Smite down as with a club, thou who hast fire for teeth, smite thou the wicked, right and left. Let not the man who plots against us in the night, nor any foe prevail o’er us.

Smite with club-force, you whose teeth are fire; strike the wicked left and right. Let none of our adversaries escape.

Agni 'Agnidamshtra' exercises Rudra-like protective ferocity. Vedic dharma allows fierce compassion: destroying Adharma that threatens Rita, without confusing cruelty toward the innocent with necessary restraint of the wicked.

Decisive action against clear abuse. When harm is real, half-measures enable it—apply firm, proportionate consequences while staying rooted in justice.

1.36.17

Agni hath given heroic might to Kaṇva, and felicity: Agni hath helped our friends, hath helped Medhyātithi, hath helped Upastuta to win.

Agni gave heroic might and well-being to Kanva; Agni has helped our friends and helped Medhyatithi, Dashavraja, and Priyamedha.

Historical memory of Agni's Anugraha on the Kanva circle—Suvirya and Svasti. Naming Medhyatithi, Dashavraja, and Priyamedha affirms that divine help is tasted in concrete human lives within a Rishi-kula.

Track evidence of what works. Remember people and practices that genuinely increased courage and welfare; replicate those conditions deliberately.

1.36.18

We call on Ugradeva, Yadu, Turvaśa, by means of Agni, from afar; Agni, bring Navavāstva and Bṛhadratha, Turvīti, to subdue the foe.

Through Agni we call from afar Ugradeva, Yadu, Turvasha; Agni, bring Navavastva, Brihadratha, Turviti, and Shayu.

Agni as summoner gathers allied human and legendary strengths—Yadu-Turvasha and other names—into the yajamana's support field. The fire bridges distance (Paravatas) by attracting beneficial alliances under sacred intent.

Network through shared purpose. A clear, warm 'signal' of values and work quality draws collaborators across distance better than cold transactional outreach.

1.36.19

Manu hath stablished thee a light, Agni, for all the race of men: Sprung from the Law, oil-fed, for Kaṇva hast thou blazed, thou whom the people reverence.

Manu established you as light for all humankind, O Agni—born of Law, oil-fed, for the people to kindle.

Manu sets Agni as Jyotis for Vishva Manushya. 'Ritajata' (born from Rita) and Ghritasnu (nourished by clarified offering) define sacred fire: not arbitrary blaze but light rooted in cosmic order for every person to tend.

Universal access to clarifying light. Education, energy, and ethical frameworks should serve the whole human community—orderly, sustaining, and open to each person's tending.

1.36.20

The flames of Agni full of splendour and of might are fearful, not to be approached. Consume for ever all demons and sorcerers, consume thou each devouring fiend.

Agni's flames of splendour and might are fearful, not to be casually approached. Consume forever every goblin and devouring imp.

Agni's Tejas is Bhima—awe-inspiring, not trivial. Approach requires Shaucha and Sraddha. His lasting consumption of Yatumavat and Kimidin affirms Tapas that burns impurity while protecting the sincere.

Respect transformative power. Nuclear tools of change—truth-telling, accountability, technology—demand humility; used rightly they end what drains life, used lightly they burn the careless.
