01

Theological significance

After leaving Mathura, Lord Krishna reclaimed land from the sea and built the fortified golden city of Dwarka with the help of Vishwakarma. The temple stands over Hari Griha (Lord Krishna's personal palace). According to tradition, the original shrine was constructed by Krishna's great-grandson, Vajranabha.

The sanctum

A 5-tiered Chalukyan stone spire rising 78 meters high, supported by 60 carved pillars. The top flies the Dhwajaji—a giant 52-yard triangular silk flag changed 5 times daily. The inner sanctum enshrines a 2.25-foot black basalt stone idol of Lord Krishna in four-armed royal posture holding conch, mace, lotus, and discus.

A pilgrimage is fulfilled not only by reaching the shrine, but by arriving inwardly— with gratitude, patience, and a quiet mind.
