THE chanters hymn thee, they who say the word of praise magnify thee. The priests have raised thee up on high, O Śatakratu, like a pole.

The Gāyatri-singers sing you; the praisers magnify the hymn; the Brahmans have raised you high, O Śatakratu, like a sacrificial post.

Indra as Śatakratu (lord of a hundred powers/rites) is elevated ‘ud vaṃśam iva’—like a pole—by Brahmanas through song. Sacred speech constructs the axis of conscious will; stuti literally erects Indra in the field of awareness.

What you repeatedly praise and articulate, you raise into governing power. Use speech to elevate your highest capacities into a visible standard for action.

1.10.2

As up he clomb from ridge to ridge and looked upon the toilsome task, Indra observes this wish of his, and the Rain hastens with his troop.

When he has climbed from ridge to ridge and surveyed the vast work to be done, Indra perceives that purpose, and the bull-hero stirs with his troop.

Ascent ‘sānoḥ sānum’ images progressive elevation of vision before action. Indra ‘artham cetati’—consciously knows the aim—then the Vṛṣṇi moves with his Yūtha. Right action follows clarified seeing of the Kartvam (task).

Gain successive vantage points before committing force. Survey the real scope of work, clarify the aim, then mobilize your energy and team.

1.10.3

Harness thy pair of strong bay steeds, long-maned, whose bodies fill the girths, And, Indra, Soma-drinker, come to listen to our songs of praise.

Yoke your long-maned, girth-filling bay stallions, O Soma-drinking Indra, and come within hearing of our hymns.

The call to yoke the Keśinā Hari and enter ‘upaśrutim’ of the Giraḥ seeks Indra’s attentive nearness. Somapā consciousness is asked not only to act but to listen—divine will as receptive sakha.

Prepare your full capacity and then place yourself where you can truly listen. Power without attentiveness misses the guidance that song—feedback, insight, prayer—carries.

1.10.4

Come hither, answer thou the song, sing in approval, cry aloud. Good Indra, make our prayer succeed, and prosper this our sacrifice.

Come, answer the hymns, praise in return, roar aloud; O Indra, companion of our sacred word, prosper our prayer and our sacrifice.

A vivid call for reciprocal Vāc: Indra should ‘abhi svara’, ‘abhi gṛṇīhi’, ‘ā ruva’. Brahma and Yajña grow when the divine answers. Vedic dialogue is two-way—human stuti seeks answering resonance from Indra.

Seek responsive environments—mentors, communities, inner clarity—that answer your effort with confirmation and amplification. Dialogue beats monologue in growth.

1.10.5

To Indra must a laud be said, to strengthen him who freely gives, That Śakra may take pleasure in our friendship and drink-offerings.

A strengthening hymn of praise should be offered to Indra, the abundant giver, so that Śakra may delight in our pressed offerings and in our friendships.

Uktha is ‘vardhanam’—that which increases Indra—and aims at his pleasure in both Suta and Sakhya. The heart of the verse is sakha-bond: Śakra rejoices in friendship as much as in Soma. Bhakti and offering are inseparable.

Invest in relationships that generously give, and strengthen them with appreciation. Mutual delight in both shared work and friendship sustains alliances.

1.10.6

Him, him we seek for friendship, him for riches and heroic might. For Indra, he is Śakra, he shall aid us while he gives us wealth.

Him we approach for friendship, him for prosperity, him for noble strength; that Śakra, Indra, sharing treasure, can indeed empower us.

Triple seeking—Sakhitva, Rayi, Suvīrya—defines complete Indra-yoga: friendship, rightful wealth, and heroic capacity. As Śakra who ‘vasu dayamānaḥ’, he distributes treasure while enabling (‘śakat’). Grace is both gift and empowerment.

Choose allies who offer companionship, material enablement, and the strengthening of your own agency. The best support both gives and makes you more capable.

1.10.7

Easy to turn and drive away, Indra, is spoil bestowed by thee. Unclose the stable of the kine, and give us wealth O Thunder-armed

O Indra, fame and spoil given by you are easy to bring forth and drive home; open the cow-pen, O rock-armed one, and make prosperity for us.

Tvādātam Yaśas is ‘su-vivṛtam’ and ‘su-nirajam’—readily revealed and driven forth. Opening the Go-vraja reprises the cave/pen liberation myth: Indra Adri-vaḥ frees blocked nourishment and light for the singers.

Ask for openings that make resources movable—access, permissions, clear pathways. Locked potential helps no one; liberation of assets into circulation creates real prosperity.

1.10.8

The heaven and earth contain thee not, together, in thy wrathful mood. Win us the waters of the sky, and send us kine abundantly.

Heaven and earth together cannot contain you when you are aroused; win for us the luminous waters and shake down the cows for us in abundance.

Indra in Ṛghāyamāṇa intensity exceeds Rodasī—heaven-and-earth cannot limit awakened will. He is asked to win Svarvatīr Apaḥ and shake forth Gāḥ: release of celestial waters and light-cows from Vṛtra’s grip.

When rightly aroused, do not let conventional limits define your capacity. Channel intense energy into releasing blocked flow—ideas, funding, compassion—into the commons of your life.

1.10.9

Hear, thou whose ear is quick, my call; take to thee readily my songs O Indra, let this laud of mine come nearer even than thy friend.

O quick-eared one, hear my call; take my hymns to yourself; O Indra, make this praise of mine closer to you even than a yoke-friend.

The climactic sakha-prayer: Stoma should become ‘yujaś cid antaram’—more inward than even a companion. Āśrutkarṇa Indra is asked for radical intimacy of attention. Vedic bhakti seeks not distant favor but innermost nearness.

Ask for deep, prioritized attention where it matters—make your true message closer than peripheral noise. Intimacy of focus is a rare and transformative gift.

1.10.10

We know thee mightiest of all, in battles hearer of our cry. Of thee most mighty we invoke the aid that giveth thousandfold.

We know you as the most bull-powerful, hearer of the call in contests; we invoke of you, most mighty, the thousand-winning protection.

Knowledge (‘vidma’) of Indra as Vṛṣantama and Havanaśruta grounds the call for Sahasrasātamām Ūtim. Confidence in divine responsiveness in Vāja (struggle) licenses bold prayer for multiplicative aid.

Base big requests on proven reliability. Invoke help from what you know can hear and respond under pressure—tested allies, tested inner strengths.

1.10.11

O Indra, Son of Kuśika, drink our libation with delight. Prolong our life anew, and cause the seer to win a thousand gifts.

O Indra, Kauśika, drinking the pressed offering with joy, extend fresh life for us and make the seer a winner of thousandfold gifts.

Addressed as Kauśika (linked to Viśvāmitra’s line), Indra is asked to prolong Navya Āyus and make the Ṛṣi Sahasrasā. Delighted Somapāna renews lifespan and multiplies the seer’s fruitful capacity—Ananda as life-extender.

Let nourishing joy renew your sense of lifespan and possibility. Sustainable delight supports longevity of purpose and multiplies creative yield.

1.10.12

Lover of song, may these our songs on every side encompass thee: Strengthening thee of lengthened life, may they be dear delights to thee.

O lover of hymns, may these songs surround you on every side; following you of increased life, may these strengthenings be cherished delights to you.

Giraḥ encircle Girvaṇaḥ Indra ‘viśvataḥ’, becoming Vṛddhayaḥ and Juṣṭayaḥ for the Vṛddhāyu. Praise as surrounding mandala nourishes the divine presence and the long-lived expansion of consciousness.

Surround your highest aim with reinforcing messages from every side—environment, routine, community. Cherished, strengthening inputs extend the life of what you value.
